A Few Rays of Light in an Uncertain Economy?
New unemployment benefits claims are down, according to the March 5 Staffing Industry Analysts Daily News "The number of U.S. initial claims for unemployment benefits fell 4.6% to 639,000 in the week ended Feb. 28 from the previous week's revised number of 670,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today."
More encouraging economic news appeared in a March 3rd story on msn.com entitled “6 Companies Dodging the Recession.” Both new and old companies, including Amazon, Netflix, Heinz, Verizon, Hershey and Colgate-Palmolive, are beating the odds by providing improved service over their competition and low-cost options for recession-strapped consumers.
President Obama's First Change - Striking a Blow for Diversity and Equality
In the first legislative act of his new administration, on January 29th President Barack Obama signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which ensures that workers who experience pay discrimination are given adequate time to discover and potentially remedy the situation.
Prior to this legislation, workers had to file a claim within six months of the first occurrence of discrimination; for most, their first paycheck. This presented a problem for workers who didn't discover the pay discrepancy until years after receiving that initial paycheck.
Said President Obama, “It is fitting that with the very first bill I sign — the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act — we are upholding one of this nation’s first principles: that we are all created equal and each deserve a chance to pursue our own version of happiness.”
January is National Mentoring Month!
In 2005 President George W. Bush proclaimed January as National Mentoring Month, honoring the role models that profoundly change the lives of young people – and encouraging successful businesspeople to mentor the next generation of young professionals.
